On November 29, 2007, 17-year-old Bobby Germany was fatally shot in Birmingham, Alabama. His death was one of 13 homicides recorded in the city that month, contributing to a total of 94 homicides for the year. This figure represented a 14% decrease from the 109 homicides reported in 2006. Despite the reduction, Birmingham's homicide rate remained high, with 41.0 homicides per 100,000 residents, based on the 2006 census estimate of 229,424 people.
