On a Christmas Eve that should have been filled with festive cheer, a life was tragically cut short in a Hoover, Alabama, apartment. Brandon Montez McIlwain, a 35-year-old male from Birmingham, was visiting a friend on the evening of December 24, 2024. What began as a social gathering took a fatal turn, leaving a family to mourn a devastating loss during the holiday season.
Inside the apartment, located in the 2200 block of Rime Village Drive, an argument erupted between McIlwain and
another guest, who was an acquaintance. The dispute escalated into a physical struggle over a handgun. In the ensuing chaos, the weapon discharged multiple times. At least two of the bullets found their mark, striking McIlwain. A call to 911 was placed at 10:59 PM, and Hoover police officers and paramedics rushed to the scene. They found McIlwain with a serious gunshot wound and immediately began life-saving measures. He was transported to UAB Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced deceased.
The individual involved in the altercation with McIlwain, identified as 29-year-old Anthony Keith Russell of Birmingham, was detained by police at the scene. Following an investigation into the night's tragic events, the case was presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. Subsequently, a murder charge was issued against Russell. He was initially held in the Hoover City Jail before his expected transfer to the Jefferson County Jail to await legal proceedings. The incident marked the first non-traffic-related homicide in the city of Hoover in over two years, shattering a period of relative peace with a senseless act of violence.
