On the evening of February 24, 2022, a 50-year-old Black / African American man named Marcus Antonio Williams was found deceased in Birmingham, Alabama. The Birmingham Police Department received a ShotSpotter alert around 7:25 p.m. which led them to the 600 block of 1st Street North in the Smithfield neighborhood. There, they discovered Williams inside a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services from Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene but were
unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead. The initial investigation into the shooting did not immediately reveal a clear motive or lead to the identification of any suspects.
At the time, this incident marked the 19th homicide investigation in Birmingham for the year 2022. Despite appeals to the public for any information that could assist in the case, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting of Marcus Antonio Williams. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek leads to find who was responsible for his death.
