Fred R. Brockman, a 52-year-old White/Caucasian man, died on November 3, 1953, in Birmingham, Alabama, after an ordinary call turned into a sudden, violent ambush. He was a Birmingham Police Department officer with a long tour on the job, known by badge number 14, and that Tuesday he and his partner were sent to investigate what officers often dread hearing over the radio: a report of a man with a gun.
