In the winter of 2025, the life of 32-year-old Juan Chapman was tragically cut short. A resident of Huntsville, Alabama, he had been visiting Birmingham when his family lost contact with him over the weekend. A sense of dread grew with each passing hour that he remained missing. On Monday, January 27, 2025, their worst fears were realized when his family discovered his body in a wooded area off Carlos Avenue in the Powderly neighborhood of Birmingham.
The grim discovery marked the city's seventh homicide of the year.
The initial investigation by the Birmingham Police Department immediately pointed towards foul play. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Juan Chapman had died from a gunshot wound, solidifying the case as a homicide. The individuals taken into custody were cousins, identified as 51-year-old Wilbert Reynolds Jr. of Birmingham and 54-year-old Dexter Jemison of Bessemer. Both men were subsequently charged with capital murder. Authorities have stated that the capital murder charge stems from the belief that Chapman was killed inside a vehicle.
