In the quiet neighborhood of Forest Park in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 43-year-old Daniel Allen Johnson, a White male, came to a tragic end on the evening of June 24, 2024. The events of that night unfolded when Birmingham police officers responded to a call about a disorderly person in the 3400 block of 7th Court South.
Upon their arrival, officers encountered Johnson.
According to statements from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency which has taken over the investigation, an altercation ensued between Johnson and the police. During this confrontation, Johnson was allegedly in possession of a knife. At some point during the encounter, an officer discharged their weapon, striking Johnson. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:18 p.m.
Those who knew Johnson described him as a kind, compassionate, and spiritual person. His life partner of 24 years remembered him as a very kind man. Neighbors in the tight-knit Forest Park community expressed their devastation over his death, recalling him as a sweet and loving man who was a great artist and was often seen walking his dog. One neighbor recounted seeing Johnson just before the fatal encounter, noting that he seemed a little off after an interaction with another neighbor, but no one anticipated the tragic turn of events.
The officer involved in the shooting has not been publicly identified. As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is conducting an investigation into the incident. The findings of this investigation will be turned over to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office for review.
