On July 24, 2008, in Birmingham, Alabama, 13-year-old Jerome McFarland was tragically killed alongside his family in a brutal home invasion. The victims included Jerome's mother, Elizabeth McFarland Witherspoon, age 34; his stepfather, Derrick Witherspoon, age 37; and his younger brother, Justin McFarland, age 11. The family was found fatally shot inside their burning home, indicating that the assailants attempted to destroy evidence by setting the residence on fire.
