In the West End community of Birmingham, Alabama, a verbal altercation on the evening of October 30, 2024, escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 38-year-old Melvin Anthony Burkes. The incident unfolded in the 1700 block of Pearson Avenue Southwest at approximately 6:00 p.m., where Burkes and another man were engaged in an argument with a third individual.
The confrontation took a deadly turn when the suspect drew a weapon and opened fire, striking both Burkes and the
other man. Birmingham Police Department officers arrived at the scene to find Burkes on the sidewalk with life-threatening injuries. Both community members and the officers provided immediate aid before Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived to transport him to UAB Hospital. Despite their efforts, Burkes was pronounced dead shortly before 6:30 p.m. The second victim sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and was also hospitalized.
In the ensuing investigation, authorities identified 37-year-old Andrew Blake Carter as the suspected shooter. On November 12, 2024, Carter turned himself in to the police. He was subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the shooting and was booked into the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
