In the late afternoon of August 16, 2022, the life of 33-year-old Patrick Lanigan Duffy was tragically cut short in Danville, Virginia. Responding to calls of shots fired at approximately 4:19 PM, police arrived at the 300 block of Halifax Street to find Duffy suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds to his upper body. Despite the efforts of first responders, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The subsequent investigation swiftly identified two suspects in connection
with the fatal shooting. The Danville Police Department began searching for 19-year-old Marte Wil-Shownn Oliver and a 14-year-old male whose identity was withheld due to his age. The younger suspect was apprehended by investigators in the early hours of August 18, 2022. He was initially charged with robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, with a first-degree murder charge added on August 25, 2022.
After several months on the run, Marte Oliver was arrested without incident on December 13, 2022, in the Gretna community of Pittsylvania County by members of the United States Marshal Service, the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Department, and the Danville Police Department. Oliver faced multiple charges, including robbery, use of a firearm during a felony, and possession of a firearm by a felon. His initial charge of first-degree murder was later amended to second-degree murder.
In the ensuing court proceedings, Marte Wil-Shownn Oliver pleaded guilty to the charges against him, which included second-degree murder, robbery causing serious bodily injury or death, use of a firearm in the commission of a murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted violent felon. His sentencing was scheduled for August 4, 2023. The case highlighted concerns about gun violence and the involvement of youth in serious crimes within the Danville community.
