On a busy evening at the Danville Mall on October 29, 2022, the life of 26-year-old Tyshais Dashawn King, a male resident of Danville, Virginia, was tragically cut short in an act of violence that reverberated through the community. King, who was known for his charismatic personality and love for rapping and dancing, was fatally shot inside the Hibbett Sports store.
The incident, which appeared to be isolated, prompted a swift and thorough search of the mall by the Danville Police Department to ensure the safety of other patrons. King was transported from the scene with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify 18-year-old Christian Isiah Pinkney as the primary suspect. Pinkney fled the scene after the shooting, sparking an intensive manhunt. Through the collaborative efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Danville Police Department, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Pinkney was apprehended in Burlington, North Carolina, on November 1, 2022. He was subsequently extradited back to Virginia to face a series of serious charges.
The legal proceedings that followed revealed the motive behind the fatal encounter. The conflict reportedly began with a dispute on social media, where Pinkney posted a hand sign considered disrespectful to a gang. This led to a confrontation at Pinkney's workplace a couple of nights before the shooting. Surveillance footage from Hibbett Sports showed a brief interaction between Pinkney and King before Pinkney suddenly drew a firearm and shot King. The footage further captured Pinkney chasing King through the mall and shooting him again after he had fallen.
Pinkney was charged with second-degree murder, malicious discharge of a firearm within a public building, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In October 2023, nearly a year after the incident, Pinkney pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a violent felon, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony as part of a plea agreement. In January 2024, a Danville Circuit Court judge sentenced Pinkney to 48 years in prison, with 28 and a half years suspended, leaving him with an active sentence of 19 and a half years to serve. During the sentencing, King's mother expressed both the profound loss her family endured and a surprising message of forgiveness for her son's killer.
