On a Tuesday evening in Danville, Virginia, the life of a young man was tragically cut short. Dwight Montel Harris, a 22-year-old Black/African American male, was found lying in the 600 block of Cabell Street on October 23, 2018. The Danville Police Department had received a call of shots fired in the area, and upon their arrival, they discovered Harris.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene, but it was too late; he was pronounced dead.
The initial investigation into the shooting suggested that Harris may have been specifically targeted. To determine the precise cause of his death, his body was sent to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy. The Danville Police Department launched a homicide investigation, diligently working to uncover leads and identify any potential suspects. Despite their efforts, the investigation proved to be challenging, and no immediate arrests were made in connection with the murder. This was not the first time Dwight Harris had been a target of violence. Two years earlier, on June 15, 2016, he and another individual, Armonti Womack, were the intended victims of a gang-related shooting. Members of the Milla Bloods street gang, at the direction of Tredaripus Keene, had gone to an apartment complex with the intent to shoot and possibly kill both Harris and Womack. In that incident, gunfire was exchanged, and while Womack and a member of the gang were injured, no one was killed. This prior event highlighted a dangerous environment and the potential threats that Harris faced before he was ultimately killed. The investigation into his murder continues as authorities search for justice for Dwight Montel Harris.
