In the early morning hours of June 1, 2025, a large outdoor gathering in Danville, Virginia, turned fatal. Jay'Shaun Tiejae White, a 22-year-old Black/African American male from Hurt, Virginia, was shot and killed. The incident occurred just before 1:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Carver Drive, where gunfire was reportedly exchanged.
Police were dispatched to the area of Carver and Cheyenne Drive after receiving reports of multiple shots being fired.
Upon their arrival, they discovered a Chrysler sedan in the roadway. Inside, in the front passenger seat, they found White, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation later revealed that shots were exchanged between the occupants of the Chrysler and other individuals at the gathering.
In addition to White's death, four other people were injured in the shooting. The suspected driver of the Chrysler, a 26-year-old male from Java, Virginia, was found on a nearby street with a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital. Shortly after, three more victims—a 31-year-old male, a 25-year-old male, and a 19-year-old female, all from Danville—arrived at the hospital with injuries from the same incident.
The Danville Police Department's investigation led to the arrests of two men who were inside the Chrysler with White. Juwan Montel Baker, a 26-year-old from Danville, was a passenger in the vehicle. The driver, 26-year-old Tyliek Niem Hanks of Java, was one of the individuals injured in the shooting. Both men were charged with three counts of discharging a firearm from a moving vehicle, three counts of malicious wounding, and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Authorities have indicated that the investigation is active and that more arrests and charges are possible.
