On a late Friday night in Danville, Virginia, a dispute between two acquaintances escalated into a fatal act of violence. On August 2, 2019, officers were called to the scene on Parker Road around 11:20 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered 21-year-old Kymon Haley, a male resident of Milton, North Carolina, lying on the ground outside with gunshot wounds.
He was rushed by ambulance to a local emergency room, but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Danville Police Department quickly identified a suspect in the shooting, 29-year-old Rakim La'Tae Knight of Danville. Investigators determined that Haley and Knight knew each other and that an ongoing argument had culminated in the deadly shooting. Felony arrest warrants were issued for Knight for willfully discharging a firearm in a public place resulting in bodily injury and the use or display of a firearm while committing a felony. For a short time, Knight remained at large, and the police sought information from the public regarding his whereabouts.
The search for the suspect concluded on Wednesday, August 7, 2019, when Rakim Knight was arrested. He was taken into custody and held at the Danville City Jail. The legal process moved forward, and in January 2020, a grand jury handed down a first-degree murder indictment against Knight for his role in Kymon Haley's death. Following the indictment, he continued to be held without bond.
