In the Huffman area of Birmingham, Alabama, on the night of February 22, 2019, a house party on Carnation Drive turned into a scene of violence. Wanya Letrec Conner, a 19-year-old Black male, was among the attendees when an altercation broke out, leading to gunfire. Birmingham Police responded to reports of multiple gunshot victims at approximately 10:49 p.m. and discovered a tragic scene inside the residence.
Conner was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting also claimed the life of 20-year-old Javian Stone and left two other individuals with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators quickly began working to piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting.
In the course of their investigation, police identified 29-year-old Desmond Ray Jones as the suspect. He was subsequently taken into custody and faced serious charges for his alleged role in the incident. Jones was charged with capital murder for the deaths of Wanya Letrec Conner and Javian Stone, as well as attempted murder for the injuries sustained by the other two victims. The case highlighted the issue of gun violence in the city and prompted calls from community leaders for greater efforts to address it.
