On a Sunday morning in Birmingham, Alabama, on October 14, 2018, Demetrius Antwan Davis, a 37-year-old Black or African American male, was shot and killed. The incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. outside the M & N Groceries at the corner of 24th Street and Pearson Avenue in the western part of the city.
According to Birmingham police, the shooting of Davis, a father of three, did not appear to be a random act of violence.
Investigators believe someone intentionally walked up to him and shot him in what they described as a targeted attack. He was pronounced dead at the scene, collapsing just feet from the entrance to the corner store. Authorities noted the presence of at least two surveillance cameras pointed toward the location of the shooting.
At the scene, a crowd of over 100 onlookers, including Davis's wife and son, gathered, with many appearing visibly emotional. The gathering became tense, with several fights breaking out before police were able to clear the area. Despite the public nature of the shooting and the presence of witnesses, police have not publicly identified a suspect or a motive in the killing.
Tragically, the story of violence did not end with Demetrius Sr.'s death. Nearly five years later, his eldest son, Demetrius Antwan Davis Jr., was also shot and killed at a Birmingham gas station. While an arrest was made in the son's case, the 2018 murder of Demetrius Antwan Davis Sr. remains unsolved, and no arrests have ever been made in connection with his death.
