On the evening of January 3, 2026, Morgan Terrell Brown, a 33-year-old man, was fatally shot in what authorities have described as a robbery. The incident, which marked Birmingham, Alabama's first homicide of the new year, took place just before 5:00 p.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex located on First Avenue South in the city's East Lake neighborhood.
Brown was discovered inside his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Within a day of the shooting, Birmingham police had taken three suspects into custody. Two of the individuals were publicly identified as 19-year-old Dante Lamar Mitchell from Hoover and 18-year-old Joshua de Albert Muse. The third person arrested was a 15-year-old, whose name has not been released to the public.
Following the arrests, all three suspects were charged in connection to the death of Morgan Terrell Brown. Both Mitchell and Muse are facing charges of capital murder stemming from the robbery. They are currently being held at the Jefferson County Jail without the possibility of bond. The 15-year-old suspect is also facing a charge of capital murder, in addition to a charge of possession of a firearm by a forbidden person.
