In what was a tragic and unforeseen turn of events, Timothy Roshun Smith Jr., a 22-year-old male from Birmingham, Alabama, lost his life in a devastating accident. On a Saturday afternoon in April 2019, Smith was in a vehicle in the parking lot of a Chuck E. Cheese in the Birmingham suburb of Vestavia Hills with his young daughter.
The unfortunate incident occurred as Smith was attending to his child, reaching into a diaper bag to presumably change her diaper.
Unbeknownst to him, a firearm was also inside the bag. The gun discharged, striking both Smith and his daughter. The single shot resulted in a wound to the man's chest and leg, while his daughter was hit in the leg.
Following the accidental shooting, both father and daughter were transported to local hospitals for treatment. While the young girl's injuries were not considered to be life-threatening and she was expected to make a full recovery, Timothy Roshun Smith Jr. succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Monday, April 15, 2019.
Law enforcement officials investigated the shooting and quickly determined that it was a tragic accident. The Vestavia Hills Police Department expressed their condolences to the family and officially ruled out any foul play. As a result of the accidental nature of the shooting, no arrests were made and there were no suspects in connection with this heartbreaking case.
