what was supposed to be a simple transaction for a pair of AirPods. Washington had accompanied her boyfriend to sell the electronics to a buyer they had connected with online. The meeting took a deadly turn when a dispute arose over the payment and the authenticity of the AirPods. During the ensuing argument, a single gunshot was fired into the vehicle Washington was in, striking her. Her boyfriend immediately drove her to a nearby hospital, but her injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into Washington's death quickly led to a suspect: Carlos Londarrius Stephens, a former UAB football player. Just two days after the shooting, Stephens turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with capital murder.
