On December 23, 2021, Birmingham police responded to a welfare check at a residence on the 5000 block of 42nd Place North. Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of 23-year-old Danija D. Mitchell and 26-year-old Xavier Alexander inside the home. Their two-year-old son, Xavier Alexander Jr., was found unharmed but crying.
