On July 28, 1920, in Jasper, Alabama, Deputy Sheriff Ben F. Barrett, aged 55, was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a union miner for disorderly conduct. During the confrontation, the miner opened fire, killing Deputy Barrett and a non-union miner who intervened to assist. A stray bullet from the altercation critically wounded a young boy nearby. The assailant was subsequently shot and killed by a citizen.
