Josie N Shea Grimmett, a 33-year-old African American woman, was fatally shot on September 22, 2009. The incident unfolded in the evening, in what was described as a residential area in the 2500 block of 11th Avenue North. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire, where they found Grimmett with a fatal gunshot wound.
Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The news of Josie's untimely death sent ripples of shock and sorrow throughout her community. Remembered as a beloved mother, daughter, and friend, her sudden absence left a void in the lives of those who knew her. Her family, devastated by the senseless act of violence, publicly expressed their grief. In the days following the shooting, her sister, Tenika Grimmett, emotionally stated, 'She didn't deserve to die on the streets like that... She didn't live that kind of life.' A suspect, identified as 26-year-old Marcus Massey of Birmingham, was arrested and charged with the murder of Josie Grimmett. At the time of his arrest, Massey was held at the Jefferson County Jail on a $500,000 bond. In addition to the murder charge, it was reported that Massey also faced two unrelated counts of attempted murder and a charge of shooting into an occupied vehicle.
