On the morning of May 7, 2021, a call to the Huntsville Police Department about a person sleeping in a vehicle led to a tragic discovery. Officers were dispatched around 11 a.m. to the 4500 block of Bob Wallace Avenue. There, they found Jaylen King, a 23-year-old Black man, unresponsive inside a car. When they attempted to wake him, they realized he was suffering from a gunshot wound.
King was rushed to Huntsville Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators with the Huntsville Police Department began to piece together the events that led to King's death, coming to believe the shooting was drug-related. A significant break in the case came a little over a month later. On June 11, 2021, police arrested an 18-year-old and charged him with capital murder. Due to the suspect's age, his identity was initially withheld from the public.
The suspect was later identified as Trinity Orlando Martin. On September 22, 2023, a Madison County grand jury indicted Martin on capital murder charges in connection with King's death. Court records stated that Martin shot and killed King while King was a passenger in the vehicle.
Martin's capital murder trial was scheduled to begin with jury selection on February 24, 2025. However, on that day, Martin halted the proceedings and pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of felony murder. As of February 2025, a sentencing hearing for Martin was scheduled for April 4, 2025.
