Phillip Wayne Fletcher was a 15-year-old Black male and a student at Mae Jemison High School in Huntsville, Alabama. His life was cut short by gun violence on September 3, 2024. His mother, Glenda Wesley, later recounted the agonizing experience of being called to the hospital by her son’s friends. She waited for three hours, fighting for information, only to be taken to a private room and told that Phillip "wasn’t here anymore."
She said her son was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That evening, Phillip was a passenger in a car with friends, reportedly headed to a high school football game. As they drove on Max Luther Drive, their vehicle was targeted in a drive-by shooting involving juveniles in another car. Gunfire struck Phillip and two of his friends. All three were transported to Huntsville Hospital, where Phillip died from his injuries. Another teen was admitted with non-life-threatening wounds.
The Huntsville Police Department investigation moved quickly. Within hours of the shooting, investigators located the suspect vehicle and detained two juveniles. One of the teens, 16-year-old Torres McCray, was arrested and charged with capital murder in Phillip Fletcher’s death. According to court documents, a semi-automatic AR-style assault pistol was used in the attack.
In the weeks that followed, Glenda Wesley spoke out, calling for change to end the cycle of youth violence. The case against Torres McCray proceeded to a preliminary hearing where, on October 16, 2024, a judge found probable cause and bound the capital murder case over to a Madison County grand jury. As of October 2024, the case was awaiting the grand jury's consideration.
