Bryant McCray was a caring and loving son, brother, and father. The 25-year-old’s young daughter was described as his everything. On the morning of Saturday, October 9, 2021, the life of the young Black / African American male was cut short when he was fatally shot in Huntsville, Alabama. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. in the 900 block of Lakefront Drive.
The Huntsville Police Department responded to the scene and immediately began a homicide investigation.
Investigators announced they believed the shooting was domestic-related. Soon after, they identified 22-year-old Devonte DeWayne McCobbie as a person of interest and asked for the public’s help with information on his whereabouts.
The search for McCobbie was brief. Later that same evening, he voluntarily turned himself in at Huntsville Police Headquarters. He was initially booked into the Madison County Jail on an unrelated felony charge. After investigators spoke with him about the events of that morning, he was subsequently charged with the murder of Bryant McCray.
The case proceeded through the legal system. In May 2023, a Madison County grand jury indicted Devonte McCobbie on a murder charge for Bryant McCray's shooting death. According to court documents, while incarcerated, McCobbie was also charged with assaulting a corrections officer in January 2023. As of November 2023, he remained in the Madison County Jail.
