In the early morning hours of February 25, 2003, a dispute over a CD player at a Huntsville, Alabama, employment agency escalated into a burst of violence that left four people dead, including 61-year-old Billy Wayne Knox Sr. and his son, 22-year-old Billy Eugene Knox Jr. The tragic events unfolded at Labor Ready Inc., where a group of hopeful job-seekers had gathered.
An argument broke out in the lobby, and 23-year-old Emanuel Burl Patterson, a regular at the agency, pulled out a 9 mm
semiautomatic handgun and began firing. Witnesses reported that Patterson first shot the younger Knox and his father before turning his weapon on others in the crowded waiting area. By the time the shooting stopped, Benjamin Ferguson, 47, and David Seiler, 46, were also fatally wounded. A fifth man was shot in the leg but survived the ordeal.
After the rampage, Patterson fled the scene and barricaded himself in his apartment, leading to an eight-hour standoff with police. During the standoff, he reportedly fired at officers. Ultimately, authorities were able to force his surrender and take him into custody.
Emanuel Burl Patterson was subsequently charged with capital murder and attempted murder for his role in the deadly shooting. The incident left the Huntsville community in mourning over a senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of four men who were simply waiting for a day's work.
