On a Tuesday evening in Huntsville, Alabama, what began as a response to a domestic violence call escalated into a tragic event that claimed the life of a dedicated police officer. Garrett Crumby, a 36-year-old male officer with the Huntsville Police Department, was fatally shot on March 28, 2023, after being 'ambushed' at an apartment complex. The chain of events began when a woman called 911 to report she had been shot at the Governor's House apartment complex. When Officer Crumby and his partner, Officer Albert Morin, arrived at the scene and attempted to make contact at the residence, they were met with gunfire from inside. Both officers were struck and immediately transported to Huntsville Hospital. Crumby, having sustained ten gunshot wounds, succumbed to his injuries. His partner, Officer Morin, was critically injured but survived and has since returned to duty.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Juan Robert Laws, was taken into custody following a brief standoff. Investigators later revealed that Laws was wearing body armor and was armed with multiple weapons during the incident, which they described as an 'ambush-style attack'. It was reported that Laws opened fire as Officer Morin pushed open the apartment door and Officer Crumby appeared in the doorway. The initial female victim and two children who were inside the apartment managed to escape through a window before Laws surrendered.
Laws was arrested and charged with capital murder of a law enforcement officer. The Madison County District Attorney's office has announced its intention to seek the death penalty in this case. Court proceedings have seen some delays due to changes in Laws' legal representation and a court-ordered mental evaluation to determine his competency to stand trial. His defense attorney has filed an intent to pursue a 'not guilty by reason of insanity' plea. Prior to this incident, Laws had pending assault charges from a 2022 case where he was accused of shooting two men.
