On June 15, 2024, 23-year-old José Federico Hernández was fatally shot at the Valley Bend Apartments in Huntsville, Alabama. The incident began when Hernández, who was enjoying time at the apartment complex's pool, became the target of racial slurs from two women related to John Albert Torres. These women reportedly mocked Hernández for his inability to speak English and used derogatory terms referring to his Mexican heritage.
