In the warm evening air of a Huntsville, Alabama summer, a gathering at an apartment complex pool took a tragic and violent turn, ending the life of 23-year-old Jose Federico Hernandez. On what should have been a relaxing Sunday, June 16, 2024, Hernandez, a Hispanic male, found himself in a verbal dispute that would ultimately cost him his life. He had come to the United States from Mexico three years prior, seeking a better life and to be with his mother and siblings who were already in the country.
The argument, which began near the poolside, escalated quickly. According to Hernandez's family, the confrontation was tinged with racial animus, with relatives of the alleged shooter telling Hernandez to 'speak English' and making other disparaging remarks. The heated exchange soon spiraled into a physical altercation. In the midst of the chaos, a 9 mm handgun was produced, and multiple shots were fired, striking Hernandez.
