On a Tuesday evening in Huntsville, Alabama, a dispute between two men escalated into a fatal encounter. Demetrius Rashod Paige, a 34-year-old Black male, was shot on November 18, 2025, after forcing his way into an apartment on Brahan Avenue. The incident, which occurred around 5:30 p.m., was the culmination of a personal disagreement between Paige and another man who knew him.
The resident of the apartment had attempted to de-escalate the argument by retreating into his home and
locking the door. Despite this, an armed Paige proceeded to break into the residence. Fearing for his life, an individual inside the home fired a single gunshot. The bullet struck Paige, inflicting life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Huntsville Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
The investigation that followed, conducted by the Huntsville Police Department's Major Crimes Unit, shed more light on the moments leading up to the shooting. It was revealed that Paige and the shooter were acquainted, having had children with the same woman. The single round that was fired not only hit Paige but also passed through and unintentionally struck a second person inside the apartment, resulting in only minor injuries for that individual.
After a thorough review of the evidence presented by the police, the Madison County District Attorney's Office concluded that the shooting was a justifiable act of self-defense. They determined that Paige was committing a first-degree burglary at the time he was shot. Consequently, the district attorney announced that no criminal charges would be filed against the shooter, closing the case as a matter of self-defense under Alabama law.
