A simmering dispute over a CD player on a Tuesday morning inside a Huntsville, Alabama employment agency tragically escalated into a burst of deadly violence that claimed the life of 22-year-old Billy Eugene Knox Jr. and three other men, including his own father. The horrific events unfolded on February 25, 2003, at the Labor Ready Inc. office, where a crowd of about 15 people had gathered, hoping to find daily work assignments.
Witnesses reported that an argument erupted between Emanuel
Burl Patterson, a 23-year-old who frequented the agency, and another individual. The disagreement, seemingly trivial in nature, took a dark turn when Patterson produced a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun and opened fire. His first victims were Billy Knox Jr. and his 61-year-old father, Billy Wayne Knox, who were both shot inside the building.
The terror continued as Patterson moved towards the exit, shooting and killing 47-year-old Benjamin Ferguson and 46-year-old David Seiler on the front steps of the agency. A fifth man was also wounded in the leg but managed to survive the onslaught. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Patterson fled the scene, sparking a manhunt.
Law enforcement officials later tracked Patterson to his apartment, leading to an eight-hour standoff. During the tense confrontation, he reportedly fired at officers before ultimately surrendering. Following his arrest, Emanuel Burl Patterson was charged with capital murder and attempted murder for the deadly rampage at the labor office.
