In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Huntsville, Alabama, a tragic event shattered the quiet of a neighborhood on Mount Charron Drive. Seventy-four-year-old Ernest Ray Bragg, a male resident, was found dead in his home from gunshot wounds in what was later ruled a homicide. Another individual, 49-year-old Daniel Lewis Jones III, was also discovered deceased at the scene, a victim of the same violent act.
Police were initially called to the residence around 12:30 a.m.
on May 1, 2024, after reports of gunfire. As officers arrived, they observed a man leaving the vicinity of Bragg's home. The individual, later identified as 33-year-old Maurice D'Antonio Chatman, initially seemed to comply with officers but then fled to another house down the street, barricading himself inside.
This initiated a tense standoff that would last for nearly eleven hours. Law enforcement established a perimeter and evacuated nearby residents to ensure their safety. SWAT teams were called to the scene as negotiations with Chatman proved unsuccessful. Various tactics were employed to peacefully resolve the situation, but ultimately, authorities had to breach the roof of the home where Chatman was hiding in the attic. After multiple entries into the residence, he was taken into custody around 11:00 a.m.
Following his arrest, Maurice D'Antonio Chatman was charged with three counts of capital murder. One of the capital murder charges was linked to the aggravated circumstance of a burglary. The investigation suggested that the fatal shootings of Ernest Bragg and Daniel Jones occurred during a burglary of their home.
