In a tragic turn of events on a Saturday evening in Huntsville, Alabama, a young life was cut short. Mekhi Kareem Douglas, a 21-year-old male, was fatally wounded by gunfire on January 9, 2021. The incident unfolded near the intersection of Sparkman Drive and Mountain Park Circle, where responding Huntsville Police officers discovered Douglas lying in the roadway.
Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced deceased at the scene by HEMSI paramedics.
The ensuing investigation by the Major Crime Unit delved into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Detectives soon determined that the violent encounter stemmed from a drug transaction that had gone fatally wrong. Their investigative efforts led them to identify two individuals connected to the death of Mekhi Douglas.
Within weeks of the shooting, the investigation culminated in the apprehension of two suspects. The Huntsville Police Department arrested 18-year-old Terrell Otey and 19-year-old Sorrel Gill. Both men were subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting death of Mekhi Douglas. Following their arrests, Otey and Gill were booked into the Madison County Jail, where they were held without bond as the legal proceedings against them commenced.
