Kyle David Mackey, a 44-year-old Black man, was killed in Huntsville, Alabama, on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 12, 2022. A verbal argument escalated into a fatal act of violence that ended his life and led to a years-long court case.
The deadly encounter happened near the 3700 block of Pulaski Pike Northwest. According to the Huntsville Police Department, Mackey and Edwin Oliver Mayes, then 34, were involved in a dispute that turned into a physical altercation inside the cab of an
18-wheeler. The confrontation ended when Mayes shot Mackey.
Investigators with the department’s Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene. They quickly identified Mayes as the suspect, and he was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Kyle Mackey's death.
The case proceeded through the legal system over the next several years. In April 2025, a judge denied a pretrial immunity bid made by Mayes. As his trial date approached, prosecutors and his defense attorneys negotiated a plea agreement to resolve the charges without further litigation.
In September 2026, Edwin Oliver Mayes pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter. A judge accepted the plea and sentenced him to a 20-year split sentence. The terms require Mayes to serve five years in prison, which will be followed by five years of probation. The sentencing brought the court case to a close.
Family and friends gathered to mourn Kyle David Mackey at a funeral service held on October 23, 2022, at the Madison Mission Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was laid to rest at Oakwood Memorial Gardens in Huntsville.
