On October 19, 2024, at approximately 6:15 a.m., 46-year-old William Demone Walker of Denver was fatally shot in the head in the 1700 block of 25th Avenue North in Minneapolis. The incident occurred after a dispute at a nearby party escalated into a street altercation. Despite prompt medical attention from officers and paramedics, Walker succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath, one individual was arrested for disorderly conduct due to ongoing aggressive
behavior and refusal to vacate the area upon police arrival. Authorities are investigating whether this person was directly involved in the shooting. As of now, no further arrests have been reported.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara expressed deep concern over the incident, stating, 'Today, tragically, another family has been ripped apart by gun violence.' He urged anyone with information to contact the police or submit tips anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
This tragedy contributes to a troubling rise in violence within the city. By this date in 2024, Minneapolis has recorded 61 homicides, surpassing the 50 homicides reported at the same time the previous year.
In addition to this recent incident, Walker had a notable legal history in Minnesota. In 1995, he was convicted of first-degree assault following a gang-related shooting in south Minneapolis. Initially sentenced to 172 months in prison, his term was later reduced to 120 months upon appeal. After his release, Walker faced further legal challenges, including the revocation of his supervised release in 2007 due to alleged involvement in smuggling drugs into a correctional facility.
