In the early morning hours of October 8, 2021, a domestic dispute in Huntsville, Alabama, escalated into a fatal encounter for 24-year-old Quentaveis Shaquan Fletcher. The conflict began as an argument between Fletcher and his girlfriend. In response to the initial altercation, the woman's brother, Michael Anthony McDade Jr., became involved.
Later that morning, at approximately 4:30 a.m., McDade accompanied his sister to the apartment she shared with Fletcher to retrieve some of her
belongings. Another confrontation ensued between McDade and Fletcher, which resulted in McDade shooting Fletcher multiple times. Emergency services were called, and Fletcher was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Another individual present sustained minor injuries and was subsequently released from the hospital.
Huntsville Police Department's Major Crimes Unit immediately began an investigation. Their findings led to the arrest of Michael Anthony McDade Jr., who was charged with murder. McDade claimed that he acted in self-defense during the altercation. A grand jury later indicted McDade for the murder of Quentavious Fletcher.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, a jury rejected McDade's claim of self-defense. In November 2024, he was found guilty of murder and assault. For these convictions, Michael Anthony McDade Jr. was sentenced to 40 years in prison for murder and 10 years for second-degree assault. McDade later appealed the verdict, but the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals upheld the convictions.
