On a day that should have been filled with celebration, a gathering of people at a home on Lagoon Drive in Enterprise, Alabama, took a tragic turn. It was May 25, 2021, just before the local high school's graduation ceremony, and friends had come together. Among them were Amez Shipmon and Dorian Lamont Bell. The atmosphere was jovial, and both men had been drinking.
What began as a playful scuffle between Shipmon and Bell inside the residence soon spilled outside and escalated into a serious fight.
The lighthearted nature of their initial interaction vanished when Bell produced a handgun. Witnesses later recounted hearing a first shot, followed by a pause of more than 15 seconds before more shots rang out. In the chaos, Amez Shipmon was struck twice in the chest. As Shipmon lay wounded, Bell fled the scene. Enterprise police were called, and they apprehended Bell a short time later.
The investigation that followed revealed that Dorian Lamont Bell, a man with a prior criminal history, should not have been in possession of a firearm. This led to federal charges against him for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a charge to which he admitted. For this federal offense, he was sentenced to 92 months in prison.
In the state case for the death of Amez Shipmon, Bell was originally charged with murder. However, the legal proceedings saw this charge amended. Bell ultimately pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. At his sentencing hearing, the court denied a request for a split sentence. Dorian Bell was sentenced to 25 years in the Alabama Department of Corrections for the killing of Amez Shipmon, bringing a somber end to a case that began with what witnesses described as a playful altercation.
