In a tragic turn of events on Monday, November 18, 2024, a dispute in Enterprise, Alabama, culminated in the death of 59-year-old Patrick John Cerqua. The incident, which unfolded in the 800 block of County Road 266, began as a verbal altercation that quickly escalated into physical violence.
According to witness accounts and police investigations, Cerqua attacked another man with a metal pipe. The unidentified victim sustained injuries to his head during the assault.
In what appears to have been an act of self-defense, the man who was being attacked produced a firearm and fired a single shot, striking Cerqua.
Law enforcement and emergency responders arrived at the scene at approximately 11:05 a.m. to find two injured individuals. Cerqua had sustained a gunshot wound to the pelvic area and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Coffee County Coroner. The man he had reportedly attacked was treated for his head injuries and is expected to recover.
The Enterprise Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division is actively investigating the fatal encounter. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have indicated that they are not seeking any other suspects and have assured the public that there is no further threat to safety. As of late November 2024, no charges had been filed against the unidentified shooter.
