On August 29, 2021, at approximately 1:51 p.m., Birmingham Police Department officers responded to a report of a person shot at 509 Avenue G in the Pratt City community. Upon arrival, they discovered that 21-year-old Artez McGowan had already been transported to UAB Hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel. McGowan was found lying on the sidewalk, suffering from gunshot wounds, and was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
