On the evening of September 17, 2021, in Birmingham, Alabama, 28-year-old Ashley Canty, a Black/African American female, was driving along Norwood Boulevard when she was struck by a gunshot. The injury caused her to lose control of her vehicle, which then collided with a fire hydrant in the 2800 block of the boulevard. When Birmingham Police Department officers arrived at the scene of what initially appeared to be a single-vehicle accident, they discovered Canty unresponsive in the driver's
seat. A community member at the scene informed the officers that she had been shot.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel transported Ashley Canty to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. She remained in critical condition for a week before succumbing to her injuries on September 24, 2021. Her death was classified as the city's 73rd homicide of that year.
Homicide detectives believe that Ashley Canty was specifically targeted by her assailant or assailants, although a clear motive for the shooting has not yet been determined. Despite the ongoing investigation by the Birmingham Police Department, no arrests have been made in connection with her murder.
