Courtney was fatally shot near Brother Bryan Park in a violent altercation that also claimed the life of another man. The dispute reportedly began over a dog and quickly escalated. The suspect in the double murder fled the scene, sparking a manhunt.
Later that same evening, Birmingham police officers located the suspect. When they attempted to apprehend him, a shootout ensued, during which the suspect was killed. In the exchange of gunfire, four police officers sustained injuries. The death of the suspect brought a swift, albeit somber, conclusion to the search for the individual responsible for Courtney Ashley's death.
