In the small university town of Tuskegee, Alabama, a promising young life was tragically cut short on the night of Friday, March 18, 2022. Reginald Tyrone Summage Jr., a 20-year-old male student and a wide receiver for the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers football team, was fatally shot at an off-campus party. The incident, which began as a fistfight, escalated into gunfire, ending the life of a man who was reportedly trying to act as a peacemaker.
Just before midnight, Tuskegee police
officers were called to the Washington Plaza on West Martin Luther King Highway, where they discovered Summage wounded in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Tuskegee Police Chief Jennifer Jordan, it is believed that Summage was attempting to break up the altercation when he was shot, a final act of courage that ultimately cost him his life.
A native of Montgomery, Alabama, and a graduate of Jefferson Davis High School, Summage was a sophomore majoring in construction science management. He was recognized as an honor roll student for the 2021 academic year, a testament to his dedication both on and off the field. Although an injury had sidelined him from playing football in the previous season, his coaches and teammates looked forward to his return, describing him as a model student-athlete who inspired others with his optimism and caring nature.
In the wake of the senseless violence, the Tuskegee University community mourned the loss of one of its own. University President Dr. Charlotte P. Morris expressed deep condolences to Summage's family and friends, lamenting the loss of a young and talented member of the Golden Tiger family. The day after the shooting, law enforcement officials arrested a suspect in connection with the killing. Marquavius Lee Debro, 21, who was not a student at the university, was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was subsequently held in the Macon County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
