In the spring of 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon quiet in a Bessemer, Alabama neighborhood, tragically ending the life of 23-year-old Johnnae Shy'Ann Fuller. A Black female, Fuller was pronounced dead at the scene on April 28, 2022, in the 1800 block of Berkley Avenue. The violence of that day did not end with her death; three other people were also wounded in the shooting.
The incident, which authorities believe was a retaliatory act connected to a previous event, left
a 19-year-old with life-threatening injuries, while two others were listed in stable condition. Investigators determined that all four victims knew each other. The shooting was not a random act of violence but rather a targeted attack that claimed one life and forever altered three others.
In the weeks that followed the deadly shooting, law enforcement officials made an arrest. In June 2022, Cedric Dewaun Evans Jr., a resident of Bessemer, was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Johnnae Shy'Ann Fuller. The gravity of his alleged actions was reflected in the additional charges he faced: three counts of attempted murder and one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.
