On May 5, 2022, Raymond Earl Hamilton, a 57-year-old man, was killed in Bessemer, Alabama, after what investigators described as a violent confrontation between a tenant and his landlord along Alliance Road. Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched in the late afternoon to a home in the Alliance community of Bessemer for a report of a shooting, and they arrived to find Hamilton dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound.
As the first response unfolded, investigators received information pointing to a possible suspect nearby. Deputies tracked the suspect down a short distance from the shooting location, but before anyone could take him into custody, the man shot himself as deputies approached. He was rushed by air to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries, leaving detectives to piece together what happened without the chance to question him.
Authorities later identified the suspected shooter as Paul Edwin Vance, Hamilton’s landlord. Reports described the shooting as stemming from a landlord-tenant conflict, with the fatal encounter ending in what investigators came to treat as a murder-suicide sequence once Vance died from his self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Because the only named suspect died, there were no arrests or court proceedings to follow—no booking photo, no arraignment, no trial—just a case file that moved from an active manhunt to a closed loop of tragedy within days.
