On a summer afternoon in Bessemer, Alabama, a father's attempt to sell a couple of handguns through an online marketplace turned into a fatal tragedy, leaving his young daughter as the sole witness to his murder. Ricky Howard Hamrick II, a 39-year-old man from Heflin, Alabama, traveled to Bessemer on July 24, 2022, for what he believed would be a straightforward transaction.
He was accompanied by his eight-year-old daughter, who was seated in the vehicle with him in the 1300 block of 6th Avenue North.
The meeting, arranged for the sale of two handguns, took a dark turn shortly before 4:30 p.m.. Two men, described as Black males, approached the vehicle on foot to meet with Hamrick. During the course of the interaction, shots were fired into Hamrick's car, striking him multiple times, including in the head. The assailants then seized the firearms and fled the scene, disappearing back in the direction from which they had come. Miraculously, Hamrick's daughter was physically unharmed during the violent encounter.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, residents in the area, hearing the gunshots, rushed to the scene. They discovered the frightened but uninjured child and took her into their home until police arrived. When Bessemer police officers responded to the call, they found Ricky Howard Hamrick II deceased in the driver's seat of his car from the gunshot wounds he had sustained.
Despite the harrowing testimony of his young daughter and the initial investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Ricky Howard Hamrick II. The Bessemer Police Department has appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the identification and capture of the two suspects. A year after the incident, Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama reiterated the call for assistance, highlighting the case in the hopes of generating new leads. The family of Ricky Hamrick continues to plead for answers and justice, left with the enduring pain of his sudden and violent death.
