On July 5, 2021, 27-year-old Jason Matthew Kirkland was found unresponsive in his cell at William Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer, Alabama. Prison staff discovered him around 4:45 p.m., and he was pronounced dead less than twenty minutes later. An autopsy performed the following day revealed that Kirkland died from accidental mechanical asphyxia. He had wedged his head and arm into the small metal door, commonly used to pass food to inmates, on his cell door, leading to asphyxiation.
