In the summer of 2021, a young man's life was cut short within the walls of a state correctional facility. Jason Matthew Kirkland, a 27-year-old male, died on July 5, 2021, while an inmate at the Donaldson Correctional Facility located near Bessemer, Alabama. At the time of his death, he was serving a 15-year sentence for nonviolent offenses.
The circumstances surrounding Kirkland's death were tragic and disturbing.
He reportedly became stuck in the door of his cell and ultimately suffocated. His body was discovered in his private cell at approximately 4:40 p.m. on that Monday afternoon, and he was pronounced dead about 20 minutes later. The incident raised serious questions about the supervision and safety of inmates within the facility.
In the months that followed, an investigation into Kirkland's death led to the arrests of two correctional officers. In May 2022, John Rodgers and Latasha Terrell were taken into custody and charged with criminally negligent homicide. The charges alleged that the two officers failed to render aid to Kirkland while they were on duty, a failure that directly contributed to his unnecessary death. Despite the incident occurring in July 2021, the officers remained employed by the Department of Corrections until their arrests nearly a year later.
