On a summer day in Montgomery, Alabama, the life of 21-year-old Jacoby Carter was tragically cut short. On June 10, 2022, Carter was found fatally shot on Upper Wetumpka Road. The incident, which authorities believe occurred during a robbery, prompted a homicide investigation. Carter, a resident of Montgomery, passed away from the gunshot wounds he sustained.
In the wake of the young man's death, the Montgomery Police Department worked to identify those responsible.
Their investigation led them to a suspect, 19-year-old Damario Capleton. Less than two weeks after Carter's death, Capleton was taken into custody and charged with capital murder in connection with the fatal shooting.
Following his arrest, Damario Capleton was placed in the Montgomery County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. The capital murder charge suggests that the alleged crime was committed during the course of another felony, in this case, robbery. The legal proceedings against Capleton are ongoing as the case moves through the criminal justice system. A funeral service for Jacoby Carter was held on June 18, 2022, at St. Mark Baptist Church in Montgomery, followed by a burial in Gilmer Cemetery.
