Branson Vinson was a 20-year-old Black man from Montgomery, Alabama. In the first hours of Sunday, July 26, 2015, the stillness of the city broke with reports of gunfire on Eagerton Road, and police and medics were rushed to the 300 block around 2 a.m.
When responders arrived, they found Vinson suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and what began as an emergency call quickly turned into a homicide investigation. The same burst of violence left two other adult men wounded; they were taken to a local hospital with injuries that were described as not life-threatening.
In the immediate aftermath, investigators treated the shooting as an active, unfolding case. Police said the circumstances were still under investigation and, at that time, no arrests had been made. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact the Montgomery Police Department or Crime Stoppers, signaling that they were still working to identify who fired the shots and why the night on Eagerton Road turned deadly.
As the investigation continued, Vinson’s death moved from a crime scene to a grieving community preparing to say goodbye. Funeral arrangements were announced for a service held the following Saturday, August 1, 2015, at First Baptist Church in the Greater Washington Park area of Montgomery, with E. G. Cummings Memorial Funeral Home handling services.
