An 18-year-old male, Jamari Smith, passed away on a Wednesday afternoon in May. Smith, an incoming freshman football player for the University of Alabama at Birmingham, was looking forward to starting his college career. On the day of his death, he was with friends at a lake in Lee County, Alabama. While swimming, he reportedly grew tired and slipped beneath the water's surface.
His friends, realizing he was in distress, called 911 for help.
First responders, including Auburn police and fire medics, arrived at the scene and began a search. They located Smith underwater and immediately initiated advanced life support measures. He was rushed to the emergency room at East Alabama Medical Center.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Smith was pronounced dead at 6:05 p.m. The Lee County Coroner's Office investigated the incident and stated that no foul play was suspected. His death was treated as a tragic accidental drowning. As this was not a criminal case, there were no arrests made and there are no suspects in connection with his passing.
