In the early hours of May 8, 2024, the life of 19-year-old Laron Ashley, a Black male also known as La'Ron Naim Guillory, was tragically cut short in Savannah, Georgia. Gunshots pierced the pre-dawn quiet, prompting a ShotSpotter alert that drew Savannah Police Department officers to the 2100 block of Alabama Avenue at approximately 3:40 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Ashley unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 4:17 a.m.
The investigation into Ashley's death commenced swiftly, with detectives from the Savannah Police Department seeking to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. In the days following the incident, authorities released surveillance footage that captured images of four individuals who were identified as persons of interest in the case. The police department made a public appeal, urging anyone with information about the identities of these individuals to come forward and contact CrimeStoppers.

A suspect, identified as Bernard Waruk, was indicted by a grand jury for the murder of Laron Ashley. Waruk was also indicted on a charge of aggravated assault in connection with the incident that took place on Alabama Avenue.
