In the summer of 2015, on the evening of June 21st, the life of 17-year-old Jemell Dwayne Law was tragically cut short in Savannah, Georgia. The young male was discovered in a crashed red Dodge Neon on West 41st Street. The vehicle, which had been reported stolen just days earlier, had collided with the steps of a vacant house at approximately 10:31 p.m. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found that Law had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead at the scene. In the immediate aftermath of the crash, several males were reportedly seen fleeing from the vehicle.
The investigation into the homicide led Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police to 19-year-old Arheem Jamal DeLoach. At the time of the investigation, DeLoach was already in custody at the Chatham County Detention Center on unrelated charges. These prior charges, filed on June 24, included theft by receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime. His arrest on these charges occurred on Montgomery Street where undercover officers were investigating a different stolen vehicle. During that arrest, police discovered a pistol that had been reported stolen in December 2014.
By June 30, 2015, investigators had gathered enough evidence to connect DeLoach to the death of Jemell Dwayne Law. While still incarcerated, Arheem Jamal DeLoach was served with an arrest warrant and formally charged with the murder of the teenager. The investigation continued after the charges were filed as authorities sought to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
