In the course of his duties, 26-year-old Patrolman Frank V. Hansen of the Savannah Police Department lost his life in a fatal shooting. The young officer, who had been with the department for a year, was responding to a report from two women who stated they were being harassed.
While attempting to question the individual accused of the harassment, the situation escalated tragically. The suspect, whose identity was later determined by law enforcement, opened fire on Patrolman Hansen.
The patrolman was struck by the gunfire and succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene and managed to evade capture. Although authorities were able to identify the person responsible for Patrolman Hansen's death, the individual was never apprehended. To this day, the suspect remains at large, and the case has yet to be officially closed with an arrest. Patrolman Hansen was survived by his wife.
